Zenbu Lounge exhibit celebrates tattoo art
To showcase its private party room, Zenbu Lounge at 7660 Fay Avenue, owned by the Rimel Family, hosted a weekend of evening entertainments that featured eight, six-foot art panels depicting “tattoo suits” created in the Japanese tradition of Yakuza.
The panels, priced at $3,000-$5,000 each, were created by the renowned tattoo artists at Guru Tattoo in Pacific Beach, among them Aaron Della Vedova, Nick Alvarez, Nate Banuelos and Roy Keating who have tattooed the likes of San Diego Charger Nick Hardwick, singer
Dave Grohlof Foo Fighters and rocker Tommy Lee. The exhibit was part of the tattoo series “Commitment,” first displayed in 2009 in Hollywood.
Guru Tattoo manager Ron Castillo said a full body suit (head to toe) tattooing costs $20,000-$30,000 and may take about 150 hours over months to complete. Zenbu manager Jerry McGuffie said the exhibit was brought to the La Jolla lounge to coincide with the Tattoo and Body Art Expo in downtown San Diego, Nov. 11-14.
