Young surfers head for the Shores

Young surfers will be giving their all Saturday during the annual La Jolla Shores Surfing Association Menehune Surf Contest.

More than 150 participants, ages 18 and younger, are expected to enter longboard, shortboard and novice divisions. Heats start at 7 a.m. and go all day, with the awards ceremony set for 3:30 p.m.

Proceeds from the contest will benefit the Surf Rider Foundation, the Rell Sunn Educational Fund and La Jolla Shores projects, including Kellogg Park Playground and The MAP Project at the south end of the beach.

In conjunction with the contest, the association sponsors an art contest for students who want their art used on contest T-shirts.

The top 35 entries of the surfing-inspired artwork are on display through April 30 in the Youth wing of the La Jolla Riford Library & Jacobs Annex, 7555 Draper Ave.

More than 200 entries were received, with Eunji Cho, an 11th-grader at Bonita Vista High School, named as winner. She received a $100 cash prize in addition to having her art on the contest shirts.

Among the sponsors of the art contest is Ando and Friends, an art-driven clothing collection from the artist Andy Davis.

Surf contest sponsors include PB Surf Shop, Excel Fitness, the San Diego Surf Lifesaving Association, Rusty, Reef, Sector 9, Sea Brothers Surfboards, South Coast, the Big Biz Show, and Norman D Productions.
