Yellow Swarm brightens up La Jolla Village streets

Girard Street was awash with yellow Sunday morning as the Yellow Swarm gathered for its monthly outing.

The yellow participants scoured the neighborhood for items for their scavenger hunt engaging shop owners and bystanders alike. Images of Nature manager Kathy Hatch said it “makes for a fun energy. It’s a nice, feel-good event.”

The members themselves were also quite the spectacle, especially Howard Singer of La Jolla, in yellow right down to his sneakers.

Participant Wendy Ruhm says her favorite part of the event is that “no one can resist smiling when we drive by!”

Nanz Zekela of Escondido founded Yellow Swarm in 2007. It is a group of nearly 200 yellow vehicle owners who gather all across the country to fundraise for Papoose Conservation Wildlife Foundation. “Yellow brings happiness to people. It’s such a joyful color,” Zekela said. She added, “There are no rules, officers or dues to pay” — all you need is a yellow vehicle to join. For more information, view
