Y has classes in self-defense

Registration is underway for two self-defense courses at the La Jolla YMCA, 8355 Cliffridge Ave.

“Fight Like A Girl,” taught by Tracie Arlington, a black-belt and certified rape-escape instructor, will be held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. July 24. The workshop is recommended for ages 12 and older.

Space is limited and a waiver to participate is required. Students should wear comfortable clothing and bring water. The workshop is $30 for members, $40 for nonmembers.

A second workshop, “Stranger Awareness and Avoidance & Bully Self-Defense,” is set for 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Aug 7. This course is designed to teach the importance of setting appropriate boundaries through role-playing and repetitive hands-on training.

Participants will receive a Certificate of Awareness after completing the class.·The course fee is $25 for members: $30 for nonmembers. Reservations for the classes can be made by calling (858) 453-3483.
