Wreaths to be placed at Fort Rosecrans on Saturday

A formal ceremony and the laying of more than 2,800 holiday wreaths is set for Saturday at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery. Sponsored by Wreaths Across America, the San Diego event is one of more than 500 wreath-laying ceremonies to be conducted simultaneously at veterans’ cemeteries across the nation.

The public event will begin at exactly 9 a.m. with a formal ceremony featuring a military band and color guard. Retired Air Force Brig. Gen. Robert Cardenas will deliver the keynote address.

Senior officers and senior non-commissioned officers from local commands will place wreaths specially designated for the Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force, Coast Guard, Merchant Marine, and POW/MIA on memorials at the cemetery. Volunteers will then place wreaths on individual graves.

The wreaths will be placed on the headstones of veterans buried at Fort Rosecrans by some 700 volunteers in remembrance of those who served their country, to honor their sacrifices, and to teach the younger generations about the true cost of our freedoms.

Those attending the ceremony should arrive at Ft. Rosecrans between 8:15 and 8:45 a.m. to be sure of parking and seating. Preference for early entry to the cemetery grounds, seating and wreath placement will be given to those organizations and individuals who registered on the volunteer San Diego website at

Qualcomm Incorporated has donated 2,500 of the wreaths to be laid at Fort Rosecrans, with some 300 donated by other local organizations. The Worcester Wreath Company of Harrington, Me., donates the ceremonial wreaths for the nationwide wreath-laying events.

The second Saturday in December marks the 20th anniversary of Maine wreaths being donated to be placed on headstones at Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Va.

This also is the sixth year of the national wreath sponsorship campaign under the guidance of the non-profit
