Wet weather expected to stick around

The gray and wet weather isn’t going away soon, and could even bring some heavier rain for the first couple of days of the work week in San Diego County, a National Weather Service meteorologist said Sunday.

The weekend weather was the result of “basically a very thick marine layer causing some light rain,” Jamie Moker of the NWS said.

In the 24 hours leading up to 2 p.m. today, NWS data showed 0.15 inch of rain fell on Escondido, 0.12 inch in San Marcos, 0.05 inch in La Mesa and

0.03 inch in Kearny Mesa.

The constant misty precipitation led to a slew of freeway traffic accidents, including one at the interchange of Interstate 8 and state Route 163 that required firefighters to rescue two people from a vehicle, according to the California Highway Patrol.

An upper-level low pressure system off the coast is moving southward and will funnel more moisture toward San Diego through Wednesday, Moker said.

The forecast calls for a 50 percent chance of precipitation Monday, rising to 70 percent on Tuesday.

High temperatures will be in the low- to mid-60s early in the week, according to the NWS.
