Week in Sports: Zimmer leads LJHS baseball to 2-1 week

La Jolla High School fell to Point Loma, 9-3, on April 28. The Vikings bounced back with a 13-9 victory over city rival La Jolla Country Day on April 29. La Jolla then toppled Canyon Crest Academy, 12-2, on May 1.

Kyle Zimmer went 6-for-9 with three doubles and a home run during the 2-1 week for the Vikings.

La Jolla Country Day topped Francis Parker, 15-3, on May 1. Michael Glatt, Jason Gilberg and Sam Ayala each drove in two runs for the Torreys.

In the April 29 loss to La Jolla, Country Day’s Connor Gerhart hit two home runs and drove in three runs.

The Bishop’s School fell to Canyon Crest Academy, 3-2, on April 29. Chris Ludwig went 2-for-3 with a double, and A.J. Chedrick had two hits in three at-bats for the Knights.

The Knights fell to Horizon Christian, 8-1, on May 1. Ludwig went 2-for-3 in the loss.

Softball

Bishop’s toppled Santa Fe Christian, 7-2, on April 27. Brianna Martinez and Elizabeth Dunn each drove in two runs for the Knights, and Gabriel Salerno struck out seven batters while allowing just six hits.

The Knights stayed hot with a 5-4 extra-innings win over Canyon Crest Academy on April 29. Salerno and Natalie Camarda each drove in two runs. Camarda also pitched all eight innings, allowing only two earned runs.

Bishop’s fell to Francis Parker, 1-0, on May 1, being no-hit by Parker pitcher Amye McIntyre in the process.

La Jolla High School fell to Coronado, 4-2, on April 28. The Vikings dropped a 9-2 decision to Cathedral Catholic on April 30.

Boys lacrosse

La Jolla High School beat Cathedral Catholic, 15-6, on April 28. Mike Soumekh scored seven goals for the Vikings, and Taylor Bourgeoise added five. Leo Brueggeman scored twice.

The Vikings continued to roll with a 9-5 victory over Scripps Ranch on May 1. O’Hara and Bourgeoise each scored three goals, Soumekh had two and Cazzi Morawski added one.

Country Day fell to Francis Parker, 9-4, on April 29.

Bishop’s toppled rival La Jolla Country Day, 14-4, on May 1 and upended San Dieguito Academy, 11-5, on April 29.

Girls lacrosse

Country Day fell to Francis Parker, 12-7, on April 27. Ariana Elegado scored two goals and had two assists for the Torreys. Liv Hipkins and Veronica Lee each added two goals, and Jodi Morris had one.

Bishop’s toppled San Dieguito Academy, 10-4, on April 29. Sophia Muller led the Knights with four goals, and Dana Christensen made seven saves.

La Jolla fell to Torrey Pines, 11-5, on April 27. The Vikings bounced back with a 12-9 win over Cathedral Catholic on April 28. They dropped a 13-7 decision to Scripps Ranch on May 1.

Track

La Jolla’s girls finished the regular season with a 94-41 victory over Mission Bay on April 30. Nihal Kayali clocked a time of 10 minutes, 59.80 seconds in the 3,200 meters, setting a school record that had stood for 29 years. Freshman Vanora Guerard won the 100 hurdles and the triple jump.

Guerard also won the triple jump at a freshman/sophomore meet on May 2 with a personal record of 16 feet, 4 inches, and placed second in the 100 hurdles with a PR of 16.52 seconds.

Swimming

Country Day’s boys topped Clairemont, 95-70, on April 30. The Torreys won all but one event, and double winners included Jihoon Yoon (200 freestyle,

100 breaststroke), Henry Clausner (100 freestyle, 100 backstroke) and Adrian Kaku (200 individual medley, 500 freestyle).

Torreys’ girls eased past Clairemont, 104-44, on the same day. Freshman Allison Rhodes was a double winner, taking the 200 freestyle and 100 butterfly. Gabi Shevel won the 50 freestyle, Alex Rhodes won the 100 freestyle, Olivia Lenz captured the 100 backstroke, and Alex Levine was first in the 100 breaststroke.

Meanwhile, La Jolla High swimmers have dominated in their last three meets against University City, Santa Fe Christian and Coronado. The boys have won all eight of their meets, and the girls have won seven of eight.

Boys volleyball

Bishop’s beat San Dieguito Academy, 25-14, 25-19, 20-25, 25-18, on April 30. Stephen Kaiser led the Knights with 13 kills without an error, and Trevor Sinclair contributed seven aces as Bishop’s improved to 15-5 and 4-2 in Coastal League play.

La Jolla suffered a three-game sweep at the hands of Francis Parker on April 28. The Vikings bounced back with a five-game win over St. Augustine on April 30.

The Vikings played in the Redondo Classic tournament on May 1 and 2, beating Oxnard and suffering losses to Redondo, Valencia and Mayfair.

Boys tennis

Country Day eased past rival Country Day, 12-6, on April 29. The Torreys beat Army-Navy Academy, 12-0, on April 30, and they topped Santa Fe Christian, 15-3, on May 1. Warren Wood and Daniel Faierman remained undefeated in Coastal League singles play.
