Week in Sports: Vikings fall to Islanders; bounce back in next game
BaseballLa Jolla High School fell to Coronado, 2-1, on April 20 with Kyle Zimmer driving in the Vikings’ lone run.
The Vikings bounced back to beat the Islanders in extra innings, 2-1, on April 21. Zac Zlatic and Yoshi Rothman drove in runs for the Vikings. Patrick Christensen held Coronado to one run on seven hits in seven innings.
Then, on April 23, La Jolla fell to Point Loma, 9-0. Christensen had two hits.
La Jolla Country Day fell to Horizon Christian, 8-7, on April 22. The Torreys led by three runs in the sixth, but their bullpen couldn’t hold it. Starter Keith Gordon scattered five hits and allowed four runs (one earned) in five innings. Anthony Torres went 2-for-3 with a home run and three RBIs.
The Torreys bounced back with a 15-4 win over Canyon Crest Academy on April 24, as they exploded for eight runs in the fourth. Frankie Brown and Anthony Torres each went 3-for-4, and Brown and freshman Sam Ayala each homered.
Country Day broke out for 14 sixth-inning runs and rolled to a 17-8 victory over High Tech High on April 25. Brown went 3-for-4 again and Torres, Ben Sweeney, Michael Glatt and Roman Valenzuela each added two hits.
The Bishop’s School secured a 13-2 win over High Tech High on April 21. Chris Ludwig went 3-for-4 with a home run and two RBIs.
SoftballBishop’s toppled Mountain Empire, 11-2, on April 22. Aj Kiyoizumi drove in three runs.
Boys’ lacrosseLa Jolla toppled Serra, 15-2, on April 21. Matt O’Hara led the Vikings with five goals, while Mike Soumekh and Scott Swenson each added three.
The Vikings rolled to a 15-6 win over Mira Mesa on April 24. Soumekh and Taylor Bourgeois each scored three goals.
Bishop’s secured a 12-0 win over Canyon Crest Academy on April 21. The Knights upended Francis Parker, 10-4 on April 24.
Country Day dropped a 15-7 game to Santa Fe Christian on April 22.
Girls’ lacrosseLa Jolla eased to a 15-2 win over Serra on April 21 and then fell to La Costa Canyon, 10-3, on April 24.
La Jolla Country Day dropped a match to Santa Fe Christian, 9-4, on April 22. The Torreys got goals from Roya Bagheri, Veronica Lee, Lani Frankville and Liv Hipkins.
Bishop’s topped Canyon Crest Academy, 10-7, on April 22 when Elyse Tierney scored four goals and Dana Christensen made 13 saves.
The Knights beat Francis Parker, 10-5, on April 24. They got three goals apiece from Tierney and Megan Murry.
TrackLa Jolla High’s girls beat Our Lady of Peace, 96-39, on April 23, winning 12 of 16 events. Vanora Guerard won the long jump, triple jump and 100-meter high hurdles, and was a member of the winning 400 relay team.
The Vikings’ Nihal Kayali became the county leader in the 800 when she posted a time of 2 minutes, 13.40 seconds at the UCSD Triton Invitational on April 25. On the same day, Guerard, Heather Martin and Marley Herrick broke La Jolla’s record for a relay triple jump record, combining to leap 96 feet, 7.75 inches.
Boys volleyballLa Jolla High School beat University City, three games to one, on April 21.
Bishop’s fell to Canyon Crest Academy, three games to two, on April 21. David Stotelmyre led the Knights with 17 kills, and Adam Wrobel had 38 assists.
The Knights dropped another five-gamer on April 23, this one to Santa Fe Christian. Alex Samon had 22 kills.
Boys’ tennisCountry Day rolled past Tri-City Christian, 18-0, on April 21. The Torreys topped Santa Fe Christian, 15-3, on April 22 and upended Bishop’s, 14-4, on April 23. Sean Taylor and Max Ferre won all their doubles matches during the week, while Warren Wood and Daniel Faierman remained undefeated in Coastal League singles play.
