Week in Sports: Torreys cruise behind Christensen


La Jolla High School cruised to a 7-0 victory over Orange Glen of Escondido in the Bully’s tournament on March 17. Stephen Foster, Kyle Zimmer and Yoshi Rothman each drove in three runs for the Vikings, and Patrick Christensen earned the win.

La Jolla fell to Valley Center, 4-3, in another tournament game on March 18. Zimmer went 4-for-4 with two runs scored.

La Jolla Country Day dropped a 7-6 game to Clairemont in the Christian Patriot tournament on March 14. Ben Sweeney had two hits and three RBI.

The Torreys fell in another tournament game, 4-3, to Mountain Empire on March 16. Sweeney and Ruben Pena each had two hits in the loss.

On March 18, Country Day lost an 11-2 decision to Christian of El Cajon in the same tournament.

The Bishop’s School fell, 14-3, to Christian on March 14. The Knights dropped an 8-4 decision to Serra on March 16.

They came out on the wrong end of an 8-3 scored against Santa Fe Christian on March 18.


La Jolla High School dropped a 12-3 decision to Our Lady of Peace in the Friar Classic tournament on March 16.

The Bishop’s School suffered a 5-2 defeat to Holtville on March 18.

The Knights bounced back with a 14-1 victory over Santa Fe Christian on March 20.

La Jolla Country Day lost, 11-0, to Orange Glen on March 16. The Torreys were on the wrong end of a 10-6 score in their March 18 game against San Diego in the Friars Classic.

Boys lacrosse

La Jolla High School topped Grossmont, 14-10, on March 17. Mike Soumekh scored five goals for the Vikings, while Max Ruttman and Matt Ohara each had three.

The Vikings upended Otay Ranch, 12-3, on March 20.

The Bishop’s School secured a 7-6 win over Rancho Bernardo on March 19. Ruttman scored four goals, and Soumekh and Tyler Bourgeois scored three apiece.

La Jolla Country Day fell to Westview, 9-6, on March 17.

The Torreys responded with a 13-3 win over Hilltop on March 19.

Girls lacrosse

La Jolla Country Day suffered an 11-8 defeat to Great Oak of Temecula on March 17. Liv Hipkins led the Torreys with three goals, and Veronica Lee netted a goal and an assist. Roya Bagheri contributed two scores, and Jodi Morris added one.

The Torreys continued their rough stretch with a 12-1 loss to Francis Parker on March 18. Hipkins scored Country Day’s lone goal on a penalty shot.
