Track and field
La Jolla High School’s girls team beat Scripps Ranch, 76-60, on April 25, securing the Western League championship for the second consecutive year.
Courtney Avampato and Nihal Kayali finished first and second, respectively, in both the 1,600 meters and the 800. Dana Hoolko finished first in the shot put at 30 feet even, second in the long jump at 15-11 and third in the 200 at 26.73 seconds.
The Vikings’ girls competed in a freshman/sophomore invitational at El Capitan on April 28, and put up some good results. Kayali set a personal record in winning the 1,600 at 5:10.84. Kayali, Avampato, Christine Richmond and Tess Plant-Thomas set a meet record in the 4x400 relay at 4:06.20.
La Jolla High School’s boys team topped Scripps Ranch, 72-64, on April 25 and secured the Western League title. Joe Binder won the 1,600 and the 3,200.
The Vikings’ boys also competed in the freshman/sophomore event at El Capitan on April 27, and Josh Aviles set a meet record with his winning toss of 43-01 in the 10-pound shot put.
La Jolla Country Day’s boys team upended Francis Parker, 91-41, on April 25 and remained perfect in dual meets at 7-0.
La Jolla Country Day’s girls team topped Francis Parker, 88-46, on April 25. Lauren Pischel set a school record in the 3,200 at 11:11.25.
SwimmingLa Jolla Country Day’s girls team edged Serra, 86-77 on April 24. Trailing by four points going into the final three events, the Torreys finished first and second in the 100-yard backstroke (Melissa Berkay and Chelsea Burns) and 100 breastsroke (Hallei Stevens and Caroline Acheatel), then won the 400 freestyle relay (Berkay, Norae Shakur, Melanie Kaplan and Burns).The Torreys’ boys team fell to Serra, 99-46, on April 24. Country Day’s lone first-place finish came from junior Owen Qi, who won the 200 freestyle and also placed second in the 100 backstroke. Sophomore Jihoon Yoon was second in the 200 individual medley and the 100 breasttroke.The Bishop’s School’s boys team fell to Coronado, 122-73, on April 25.The Knights’ girls team fell to Coronado, 102-73, on April 25. Sisa Mateo swam a personal best time of 1:09.55 in the 100 butterfly.
Boys lacrosseThe Bishop’s School rolled to a 16-9 victory over Canyon Crest Academy on April 23. Mike D. Jensen led the way with five goals, and Dillon DuPont had three goals and an assist. Will Geier scored just once, but assisted on seven goals.The Knights kept it going with a 10-2 win over Francis Parker on April 25. Patrick Wafer scored four goals and had an assist. Jensen scored three times.Bishop’s beat San Dieguito Academy, 7-6, on April 27. Geier and Wafer each scored twice, and Luis Montiel made nine saves.
Girls lacrosseThe Bishop’s School fell to Francis Parker, 7-5, on April 25. Riley Sexton registered a hat trick.The Knights bounced back with a 7-5 win over San Dieguito Academy on April 27. Emily Reit scored four goals, Sexton had three, and Nicole Ballon-Landa had two. Jacqueline Rhodes made three key interceptions, and Felicity Bradely made six saves.
Boys volleyballThe Bishop’s School fell to San Dieguito Academy, 23-25, 18-25, 25-27, on April 24. Wheeler Hadden registered 19 kills, David Stotlemyre had eight, and Corey Malkiewicz added seven.The Knights beat Santa Fe Christian, 25-17, 25-16, 25-20 on April 26. Hadden led the team with 11 kills and eight aces. Marcus Montanile added four kills and two aces, and Chandler Frost had 26 assists.
Boys golfLa Jolla Country Day beat Francis Parker, 196-202 at Riverwalk Golf Course on April 19, securing its fourth straight Coastal League South title. Sam Rogers shot the Torreys’ low round, a 1-under-par 35.
BaseballLa Jolla High School beat Cathedral Catholic, 8-1, on April 24. The Vikings topped University City, 4-2, on April 26.La Jolla Country Day dropped a 7-2 game to Francis Parker on April 24. The Torreys bounced back with a 4-3 win over Horizon Christian on April 26. On April 28, Country Day split a doubleheader with Santana, dropping the opener, 14-4, but winning the nightcap, 7-6.The Bishop’s School fell to Francis Parker, 13-1, on April 26.SoftballLa Jolla Country Day beat San Dieguito Academy, 5-4, on April 23.The Torreys fell to Francis Parker, 7-0, on April 25. They also dropped a 10-0 game to Horizon Christian on April 25.
