LJCD baseball gets off to a hot start
La Jolla Country Day’s baseball team opened the season with wins in two of its first three games.The Torreys dropped their opener, 5-3, to Madison in the Christian Patriot tournament on March 8, despite Keith Gordon’s four scoreless innings and a home run from Anthony Torres.
They rebounded with a 14-1 tournament win over El Cajon Valley on March 10. Connor Gerhart went 3-for-3 with four runs.
On March 13, Country Day topped Clairemont, 7-1. Jason Gilberg had two hits and allowed one run in six innings.
La Jolla High School played to a 6-6 tie with Sweetwater in the Bully’s East tournament on March 9. In the same tournament, the Vikings fell to El Camino, 17-7, on March 11 and lost to Mar Vista, 11-6, on March 13.
The Bishop’s School opened with a 14-5 win over Imperial on March 6. The Knights beat Lincoln, 9-4, in the Christian Patriot tournament March 8, and lost a tournament game, 4-3, to Christian on March 10.
La Jolla fell, 15-3, to Madison on March 11.
Country Day opened its season with a 6-3 win over Kearney on March 9.
Bishop’s lost to Coronado, 13-2, on March 9.
La Jolla fell to Santa Fe Christian, 12-7, on March 12, despite three goals from Taylor Bourgeios. Matt Ohara scored twice and Mike Soumekh and Mike Claorusso had one each.
Country Day fell, 12-5, to Scripps Ranch on March 10.
La Jolla dropped a 12-6 game to Rancho Bernardo on March 12.
Country Day lost, 5-4, to Ramona on March 12. The Torreys fell, 13-4, to Santa Fe Christian on March 12.
La Jolla turned in some solid individual results at the Bronco Invitational on March 13. Venora Guerard broke the school record in the triple jump with a mark of 37 feet, 6 ¼ inches. Jose Aviles won the boys’ shot put, throwing 55-4 ¼.
Jeremy McGrath was second in the girls’ pole vault at 14-1, and the boys’ distance medley relay team of Andrew Farkas (1,200 meters), Daniel Chu (400), Alex Eve (800) and Michael Conroy (1,600) placed second in 10 minutes, 55.25 seconds.
Country Day started its league season with a 205-243 victory over Bishop’s at La Jolla Country Club on March 8. The Torreys’ Anthony Paolucci was the medalist with a 38.
Country Day edged El Camino, 203-207, at Del Mar Country Club on March 10. Paolucci shot 35.
Country Day played in the St. Augustine Invitational, played March 11 and 12 at Cottonwood Canyon Golf Course, and Paolucci’s 36-hole score of 136 gave him the individual title.
