Bishop’s wins three titles; La Jolla High takes twoAll in all, it was a very good weekend for La Jolla’s high school athletes who combined to bring home five CIF titles.
Girls’ basketballThe Bishop’s School capped its stellar 2008-09 season on March 7 by winning the CIF San Diego Section Division IV championship, rolling past Mater Dei of Santa Anta, 71-63.
Gizelle Studevent led the Knights with 25 points, and Inga Orekhova added 23. Brianna Martinez chipped in with 11.
The Knights reached the title game with a 81-38 win over Santa Fe Christian in the March 3 semifinal. Orekhova lit up the scoreboard with 32 points.
Bishop’s (28-2) earned the top seed in the CIF State D-IV playoffs. After a first-round bye, the Knights were scheduled to host St. Joseph’s of Santa Maria or LACES of Los Angeles on Tuesday, after the Light’s press time.
La Jolla Country Day suffered a 51-44 defeat to Mater Dei of Chula Vista in the CIF SDS D-IV semifinals on March 3. Maya Hood scored 16 points for the Torreys, but no other player was in double figures.
Bishop’s girls defeated Santa Maria St. Joseph, 74-55, on Tuesday and play L.A. Pacific Hills at home at 7 p.m. Thursday.
Boys’ basketballThe Bishop’s School boys matched the Knights’ girls success, also securing the CIF SDS D-IV title. The boys scored a 46-30 victory over Francis Parker in the March 7 championship game.
The Knights got 14 points from David Stotlemyre, 13 from Malik Love and nine from Stephen Kaiser.
The Knights reached the title game with a 51-47 overtime victory over Horizon Christian on Feb. 4. Love poured in 22 points, and Stotlemyre added 17.
Bishop’s (25-4) was seeded second in the CIF State D-IV playoffs and was scheduled to host Morningside of Inglewood in a first-round game Tuesday.
Later Saturday afternoon, the La Jolla High Vikings topped Cathedral Catholic with a 44-39 victory, to capture the D-III title.
La Jolla lost Monday to Canyon of Anaheim, 60-46.
Bishop’s lost to Morningside, 45-43, on Monday.
Girls’ soccerLa Jolla High School secured the CIF SDS D-III title with a 4-0 triumph over Coronado on March 7. The Vikings won thanks to two goals from Callan Parra and single scores from Briana Champion and Katie Wahl.
The Vikings reached the championship game with a 3-2 overtime victory over Cathedral Catholic on March 4.
La Jolla (15-3-2) was seeded second in the CIF Southern California D-II regional playoffs, and was scheduled to host San Jacinto in the first round on Tuesday.
The Bishop’s School topped Francis Parker, 2-1, to capture the CIF SDS D-IV championship on March 7. Kaylie Davidson scored twice for the Knights.
The Knights got to the title contest by beating Christian, 4-1, in the March 4 semifinals.
Bishop’s (15-4-3) earned the top seed in the CIF Southern California D-III regional playoffs, and was scheduled to host Vasquez of Acton in a March 10 first-round game.
La Jolla defeated San Jacinto, 1-0, and faces Granite Hills on Thursday.
Bishop’s defeated Acton Vasquez 5-1, and plays Desert Christian at 5 p.m. Wednesday.
Boys’ soccerThe Bishop’s School fell in the CIF SDS D-IV semifinals on March 3, falling to Francis Parker on penalty kicks, 3-1, after the teams had tied at 1 in regulation and overtime play.
