Week in sports: LJCD roller hockey bounces back from loss to claim title

La Jolla Country Day’s roller hockey team clinched the South Bay League title with an 8-1 win over St. Augustine on Feb. 11.

Ben Sweeney and Sam Brink each had a hat trick; Owsiany and Cameron Eibl both scored once. Country Day improved to 14-4 and 13-0 in league play. The victory followed a Feb. 9 loss to Poway, 6-3, when Joey Sowka scored two goals for the Torreys.

Country Day bounced back with a 15-1 victory over Sweetwater on Feb. 10. Ben Sweeney and James Owsiany each scored five goals.

Boys’ basketball

La Jolla High School beat Scripps Ranch, 61-55, on Feb. 10 and then fell to Lincoln, 58-52, on Feb. 13.

The Bishop’s School eased to a 64-38 win over city rival La Jolla Country Day on Feb. 13.

The Knights also upended Horizon Christian, 57-48, on Feb. 10.

La Jolla Country Day secured a 44-32 victory over Canyon Crest Academy on Feb. 10.

Girls’ basketball

The Bishop’s School edged city rival La Jolla Country Day, 51-44, on Feb. 13.

The Knights also cruised to a 64-40 win over Horizon Christian on Feb. 10.

La Jolla Country Day rolled to a 70-46 victory over Canyon Crest Academy on Feb. 10.

La Jolla High School dropped a 39-26 decision to Scripps Ranch on Feb. 10.

Boys’ soccer

La Jolla Country Day fell to Canyon Crest Academy, 2-1, on Feb. 10. The Torreys’ goal came from Rodrigo Cuenca on a through ball from Lee Klitzner.

The Torreys responded with a 1-0 victory over city rival The Bishop’s School on Feb. 13. Alex Fleischhacker scored a second-half goal, assisted by Alex Poyhonen. Mical Bailey earned the shutout in goal.

Bishop’s topped Horizon Christian, 4-0, on Feb. 11.

La Jolla High School rolled past Kearny, 3-0, on Feb. 12.

Girls’ soccer

La Jolla High School fell to Coronado, 2-1, on Feb. 10. The Vikings kicked to a 2-2 tied with University City on Feb. 13.

The Bishop’s School eased to a 5-0 victory over rival La Jolla Country Day on Feb. 13.

Stevie Griglak scored twice for the Knights, and Lindsey Holman Kelley had four assists.

The Knights picked up a 3-0 win over Horizon Christian on Feb. 11.

La Jolla Country Day fell to Canyon Crest Academy, 3-0, on Feb. 11.

Wrestling

La Jolla High School fell to Madison on Feb. 11 in its final dual meet of the season. Quinn Strausser (135 pounds), Joey Bruder (140) Jordan Dyer (160) Diego Alayza (171) and David Blasquez (heavyweight) all won for the Vikings. Dyer’s victory gave him a 6-0 record in league duals this season and the Western League championship..
