Week in Sports: La Jolla, Bishop’s football squads fall

La Jolla High School suffered a 28-10 defeat to St. Augustine on Sept. 26, falling to 2-2 this season.

La Jolla took a 3-0 first-quarter lead and kept it close, trailing 14-10 at the end of three frames, but the host Saints ran away with the game by out-scoring the Vikings, 14-0, in the fourth.

Yoshi Rothman helped lead La Jolla’s offense, catching seven passes for 89 yards.

Victor Rangel paced the defense with seven tackles, while Thomas Brown and Andy Jones each had seven tackles and a sack. Robbie Beathard added five tackles.

The Bishop’s School suffered a 35-14 defeat to El Cajon Valley on Sept. 26.

The Knights totaled 335 yards of offense. Freshman quarterback Joey Moreno led Bishop’s by completing 17 of his 26 passes for 156 yards and two touchdowns, both to Micah Seau. A.J. Chederick rushed 10 times for 63 yards.

Girls’ volleyball

The Bishop’s School prevailed in a five-game thriller with Poway on Sept. 24, winning 25-17, 25-12, 21-25, 20-25, 15-7. Kristen Casey led the way with 13 kills and 13 digs, and Kendall Lord added nine kills. Ina Kamenova totaled 39 assists, and Hannah Saber contributed four aces.

The Knights continued their solid play by going 7-1 in the Beach Cities Invitational and advancing to the tournament final. On Sept. 26, they went 3-0 in pool play, with wins over Palisades Charter, Silverado (Ariz.) and Service (Ark.). On Sept. 27, they toppled Esperanza of Anaheim, Santa Fe Christian and Dana Hills.

In the finals, Bishop’s fell to Orange Lutheran in a three-game battle. Kristen Casey led the Knights with 29 kills on the day, and Thea Derrough and Carly Bollert each had 24. Gantz, Carly Guiducci, and Hannah Saber led a strong defensive effort.

Cross country

The Bishop’s School turned in some strong performances at the Mt. Carmel Invitational at Morley Field on Sept. 25.

The Knights’ boys’ team placed sixth in the Division II freshman race, as Will Botta, Patrick Hoagland and Zach Lana finished fourth, fifth and 10th, respectively. Chris Kuntz improved his time by 55 seconds over last year in a strong individual performance in the sophomore race, and Henry Su covered a 2.95-mile course in 17 minutes, 1 second, good enough to finish 24th in the senior race.

Lauren Collins finished 12th in the Division II girls’ sophomore race, running a 2.7-mile course in 17:54. Michelle Wu placed in the top 50 in the girls’ sophomore race, and in the senior race, three Bishop’s runners finished in the top 20 – Laura Wyatt was 10th, Elizabeth Schulze was 17th, and Naomi Wagner was 18th.

La Jolla High School’s girls’ team traveled to the Stanford Invitational on Sept. 27, and returned with some positive results.

Nihal Kayali placed seventh with a time of 19:10 over the 5,000-meter course. Tess Plant-Thomas was 39th in 20:21, Courtney Avampato was 40th in 20:21, Ilanna Fricks was 73rd in 21:21, and Meagan Bautista finished 79th in 21:27.

Zoe Wesco was 81st in 21:29, and Catherine Russell’s time of 21:45 was good enough for 94th.

La Jolla’s boys’ team ran in the South Bay Invitational on Sept. 26, placing fifth out of 15 teams. Michael Conroy led the way, finishing 10th. Bryant Hammershamb finished 11th, Andrew Farkas was 26th, Alex Eve was 27th, and James Giammona was 89th.

Girls’ golf

The Bishop’s School secured a 211-233 victory over Cathedral Catholic at La Jolla Country Club on Sept. 22. Libby Hooton led the team with a 1-over-par 37, and Courtney Hooton shot a 39.

The Knights continued to roll on Sept. 24 with a 208-229 victory over San Pasqual Academy at Vineyard Golf Course. Alexas Bisbas carded the low round of the day, a 39. Dennell Falk shot a score of 39 as the Knights improved to 6-1 on the season.

Bishop’s fell to Poway, 206-208, on Sept. 25 at La Jolla Country Club. Freshman Spenser Krut led the Knights with a 1-over-par 37.

Perennial Division II powers meet in an early season game that could be a playoff preview. The Vikings and Islanders always seem to be in the mix once the playoff bracket gets down to the quarterfinals, so both teams will be taking close notes in anticipation of a November rematch with plenty on the line.
