Boys basketball

The Bishop’s School cruised to a 59-51 victory over La Costa Canyon in the Above The Rim Tournament on Dec. 22. Junior guard Michael Eribez and senior forward Andrei Lucas each scored 13 points for the Knights in a tightly contested victory.

Bishop’s narrowly edged out Hoover High School, 56-54, in tournament action on Dec. 23, outscoring its opponent, 16-11, down the stretch in the fourth quarter.

Sophomore post player David Stotelmyre scored a team-high 19 points, Lucas added 17, and junior guard Jywrell Wilson had 10 points in a balanced effort.

Stotelmyre and Lucas were the two Bishop’s players named to the all-tournament team.

The Knights moved on to the Banbaur Classic at Marian Catholic in Northern California, and on Dec. 27, they toppled River City, 75-56. Wilson led the charge with 23 points, Stotlemyre scored 14, and both senior guard Sterling Jones and Lucas added 13 points.

La Jolla Country Day sailed to a 55-44 victory over Calvary Christian in the Cornerstone Christian Classic tournament on Dec. 22. Freshman guard/forward J‚vonte Brooks led the Torreys with an impressive double-double of 22 points and 18 rebounds, while junior guard Travis Golia and freshman guard E.J. Edwards each added 10 points.

The Torreys continued to roll with a 76-36 thumping of Central City later on the 22nd. Brooks scored 17 points, junior forward/guard Kyle Reese added 14, Golia had 12 and senior guard Kevin Ings scored 10 in one of Country Day’s most balanced efforts this to date this season.

In the Paloma Valley Tournament on Dec. 27, the Torreys fell to Rialto, 63-48 despite getting 13 points from Ings and 10 more from Brooks. They bounced back quickly, though, with a decisive 52-49 win over Roosevelt in the same tournament on Dec. 28. Ings lit up the scoreboard for 30 points, including seven successful three-pointers, and Brooks added 10 points in the victory.

La Jolla High School picked up a convincing 71-33 victory over Montgomery on Dec. 22. The Vikings got a team-high 19 points from senior guard Andrew Heap and 12 points each from senior guard Kevin Campbell and junior forward Matt Jones. Campbell scored all his points on three-pointers, going 4-for-5 from behind the arc.

The Vikings edged Drake, 53-46, in the Banbaur Classic on Dec. 27 behind 13 points from Heap and 10 from Moyer. In the Marian Catholic Tournament on Dec. 28, the Vikings fell to Oakland, 56-50. Junior forward Peter Sefton scored 11 points, and Moyer totaled 10 in a losing effort.

Girls basketball

The Bishop’s School eased to a 72-28 win over Mar Vista in the Knights Holiday Classic, their own tournament, on Dec. 22. Standout senior guard/forward Kathleen Roehrkasse led the way with 22 points, while sophomore point guard Bianca Padilla totaled 17 and junior guard Michelle Brunker and freshman forward Elaina White each scored 15.

In the Knights‚ 62-20 triumph over Strathscona later in same the day, Roehrkasse hit for 27 points and Brunker added 13.

Bishop’s eased past Virgin Valley of Nevada, 69-30, on Dec. 23, getting 23 points from Roehrkasse, 14 from Brunker and 12 from Padilla.

In the West Coast Jamboree on Dec. 27, Bishop’s steamrolled Calavares, 77-37. Roehrkasse exploded for a near triple-double of 29 points, 18 rebounds and nine steals. Padilla scored 13 points, and White added 12. The Knights fell to Bishop O’Dowd, 63-62, on Dec. 28.

Roehrkasse totaled 31 points and 10 rebounds, Padilla scored 13 points, and White added 12, but Bishop’s fell just short.

La Jolla High School recorded a 46-31 victory over Vincent Memorial in the Crawford Tournament on Dec. 22. Junior wing player Olivia Waldon scored 12 points, while senior guards Alyssa Wilson and Stephanie Guillou each added 10 to the cause.

The Vikings toppled Mission Hills of San Marcos, 48-29, in the tournament‚s third-place game Dec. 23. Waldon poured in 19 points, and Wilson was close behind with 18.

Waldon was selected to the all-tournament team.

La Jolla Country Day suffered a 61-49 defeat to Highlands Ranch on Dec. 21 despite a 20-point, 14-rebound effort from junior guard Dominique Conners. No other player, however, scored in double figures for the Torreys.

Girls soccer

The Bishop’s School kicked to a scoreless draw with Clovis in the Tri-Valley Varsity Tournament on Dec. 20. The Knights them fell, 5-0, to Monte Vista of Danville on Dec. 21 in the same tournament.

Bishop’s suffered a 2-1 defeat to Carondelet of Concord later on the 21st. Senior midfielder Natalie Wheeler scored for Bishop’s, on an assist from senior forward Chelsea Wilkinson.
