Week in Sports: Bishop’s volleyball third in tourney
Area girls volleyball teams had a busy week, between nonconference games and the Beach City Invitational.
The Bishop’s School suffered a 25-22, 25-20, 25-21 defeat to Cathedral Catholic on Sept. 22. Thea Derrough led the Knights with nine kills, and Hannah Saber added nine digs.
On Sept. 24, Bishop’s pulled out a 25-21, 23-25, 25-15, 25-27, 25-11 victory over Poway. Maddie Lord totaled nine aces in the match, and Stephanie Yetter had five while also hitting at an impressive .625 clip.
The Knights played Sept. 25 and 26 in the La Jolla High Beach City Invitational, and finished third. They swept Mountain View (Mesa, Ariz.), La Habra and Pacific Ridge on Sept. 25, then swept their first two matches Sept. 26, against Valley Center and El Toro.
Bishop’s dropped a 25-23, 25-20 semifinal match to Sunnyslope (Phoenix) before toppling Mead (Spokane, Wash.), 25-18, 18-25, 15-9 to secure third place.
Ina Kamenova totaled more than 100 assists on the tournament’s second day, while Derrough had 32 assists and Kristen Casey added 27. Kelly McPherson and A.J. Kiyoizumi were the team’s defensive leaders, coach Tod Mattox said. Casey and Derrough were named to the all-tournament team.
La Jolla High School beat Brawley, 25-23, 25-21, in the Beach City Invitational on Sept. 25. Madeline Lee and Haley Cameron led the Vikings with six kills each, and Grace Drozda added three aces.
On Sept. 26, the Vikings dropped a 27-25, 25-21 decision to Santa Fe Christian. Cameron and Drozda each had seven kills in the defeat.
Football
La Jolla suffered a 45-7 loss to St. Augustine on Sept. 25. The Vikings fell behind, 14-0, by the end of the first quarter, trailed, 38-7, at halftime and could never catch up.La Jolla’s lone touchdown came on an 8-yard run by quarterback Zac Zlatic, and the Vikings totaled just 84 yards of offense.
Andy Jones led La Jolla’s defense with five tackles and a fumble recovery.
Bishop’s dropped a 33-19 decision to Mar Vista on Sept. 25.
Girls golf
La Jolla rolled to a 268-360 win over San Diego High on Sept. 21 at Torrey Pines Golf Course’s North Course. Juliette Garay led the Vikings with a 3-over-par 39.The Vikings then upended University High, 278-304 at Torrey Pines North on Sept. 23. Garay shot a 43, and Jasmine Graze carded a 56.
Bishop’s secured a 236-274 victory over Canyon Crest Academy on Sept. 22 at La Jolla Country Club. Courtney Hooton was the medalist at even-par 36, and Spenser Krut shot 41 for the Knights.
Bishop’s continued to roll with a 219-301 win over Horizon Christian in a Sept. 23 match at Mission Trails Golf Course. Krut earned medalist honors with a 39, and Hooton shot 41. McKenna Meyer carded a 44, and Alexa Bisbas shot 45.
Field hockey
Bishop’s toppled Canyon Crest Academy, 1-0, on Sept. 22. Irene Kim scored the game’s lone goal, and Carrie Clowney and Joy Hermes split the shutout in goal for the Knights.But the team suffered a 4-0 defeat to San Dieguito Academy on Sept. 25.
