Week in Sports: Basketball teams fall short
Girls’ soccerLa Jolla High School’s run toward a CIF Southern California Regional championship came up just a bit short.
The Vikings fell, 1-0, to Harvard-Westlake of North Hollywood, in the Division II regional championship game on March 14 at Downey High School in Warren.
La Jolla, which had been seeded second in D-II, fell to the top seed in the title game after a remarkable run to get there. The Vikings finished the season with a 17-4-2 record.
They beat seventh-seeded San Jacinto, 1-0, in their first-round regional game on March 10. On March 12, they kicked to a scoreless tie with Granite Hills and came out victorious in penalty kicks, 5-4.
The Bishop’s School also saw its run cut short. The top-seeded Knights beat No. 8 Vazquez of Acton, 5-1, in the first round of the Division III regional playoffs on March 10, but saw their season end with a 2-1 loss to eventual champion Desert Christian of Lancaster (seeded fifth) in the semifinals on March 12.
Girls’ basketballThe Bishop’s School suffered a seemingly premature end to its season, as the Knights, seeded first in the CIF State Division IV playoffs, fell in the regional final, 54-51, to Mater Dei Catholic of Chula Vista on March 14.
The Knights, CIF SDS Division IV champions, had rolled past St. Joseph’s of Santa Maria, 74-55, in the first round on March 10. They escaped with a 48-45 regional semifinal victory over Pacific Hills of West Hollywood on March 12, but fell one step short of the state championship game.
They finished the season with a 30-1 record.
Boys’ basketballLa Jolla High School fell in the first round of the CIF State Division III playoffs, falling to Canyon of Anaheim, 60-46, on March 10. The Vikings, the CIF SDS D-III champions, finished their season 17-15.
The Bishop’s School suffered a first-round loss in the CIF State Division IV playoffs, dropping a 45-43 decision to Morningside of Inglewood on March 10. The Knights, seeded second after winning the section D-IV title, finished the season 25-5.
