Week in Sports: April 19, 2007


La Jolla High School won each of its three games last week, improving to 14-4.

On April 10, the Vikings opened their Western League schedule with an 11-2 win over Clairemont. Billy Bright worked seven strong innings on the mound, Peter Sefton doubled twice and drove in four runs, and Jim Filter had three hits and two RBIs.

La Jolla won a rematch with Clairemont on April 12, this time by a 6-1 score. Pitcher Wyatt Hoff earned the win, improving to 5-0.

The Vikings earned city bragging rights with their 6-5 win over The Bishop’s School at San Diego State’s Tony Gwynn Stadium on April 14 in their annual Saturday night game at the college. Hoff had two hits, drove in three runs and earned the save.

La Jolla Country Day suffered an 8-3 defeat to San Dieguito Academy on April 11. Zack Kusnir pitched six strong innings, but the Torreys allowed five runs in the seventh en route to a defeat.

The Torreys split a doubleheader with Montgomery on April 14, dropping the first game by a 5-2 score but bouncing back to win the nightcap, 2-0.

Country Day got a big pitching performance out of Greg Wisenberg in the win, as he pitched a complete game and struck out eight, working out of a bases-loaded jam in the sixth inning. Junior catcher Mike McKenna went 2-for-3 with a triple and an RBI, and threw out three of four runners from behind the plate.


La Jolla High School rolled to a 4-2 win over Brawley on April 10, as Lauren Steinmetz tripled twice and Jenny Russell turned in a strong performance in the circle. Russell also pitched on April 12, in the Vikings’ 2-0 win over Point Loma.

La Jolla Country Day secured a 12-3 win over Santa Fe Christian on April 11. Sammy Berenter went 4-for-4 with four doubles and a walk, and Chelsea Burns and Ariel Abbott each contributed key hits. Brittany Dawson pitched a complete game and earned the win.

Track and field

La Jolla Country Day and The Bishop’s School split a dual meet on April 12, with the Torreys winning the boys competition, 81-54, and the Knights taking the girls side, 77-69.

Alex Maire won four events for Bishop’s: the 100, 200, triple jump and long jump. Alex Poyhonen won three events: the 800, 1,600 and 3,200. On the girls side, Lauren Pischel represented Bishop’s well by winning both distance events.

La Jolla High School’s girls team secured an 86-50 win over Kearney on April 11. Meagan Forrey set a personal record in the 100-meter hurdles, while Jessica Wood and Cameron Smith set personal records in the 100, Courtney Avampato did so in the 800 and Maya Gamble set a personal record in the 3,200.


The Bishop’s School swam to a 106-64 win over Scripps Ranch on April 11. Chelsea Smith-Carmichael won the breaststroke with a personal-best time of 1 minute, 14.19 seconds, and Noel Elgamel clocked a notable time of 1:04.44 in the 100-yard backstroke.

The Knights’ boys team fell to Scripps Ranch, 101-68, on April 11.

La Jolla Country Day’s girls team beat Mission Bay, 109-44, on April 10. Double winners included Melissa Berkay, in the 500 freestyle and the 100 backstroke, and Norae Shakur, in the 50 freestyle and the 100 butterfly. Chelsea Burns won the 200 freestyle and was second in the 100 breaststroke.

The Torreys’ boys team, short-handed due to injuries, fell to Mission Bay on April 11, 92-46. Jihoon Moon won the 200 individual medley with a personal best time, and Henry Clausner won the 100 breaststroke with his top time of the season. Owen Qui was second in the 200 freestyle and the 100 backstroke.

Girls lacrosse

The Bishop’s School toppled Serra, 7-5, on April 10, getting a hat trick from Nicole Ballon-Landa and two goals from Riley Sexton. Felicity Bradely made eight saves in goal for the Knights.

Bishop’s secured a 9-6 win over city rival La Jolla Country Day on April 11, as Sexton lit up the scoreboard with five goals. Emily Reit scored twice and had two assists, while Emily Johnson and Ballon-Landa each scored once.

Country Day fell to Helix Charter, 17-3, on April 9. The Torreys dropped a 10-4 game to Carlsbad on April 13.

La Jolla High School beat La Costa Canyon, 9-7, in the Western States tournament on April 9. The Vikings topped Patrick Henry, 15-6, on April 11.

Boys lacrosse

La Jolla Country Day beat Otay Ranch, 8-0, on April 11.

Boys golf

La Jolla High School beat Clairemont 206-243, at Torrey Pines North on April 10.

Boys tennis

La Jolla High School beat The Bishop’s School, 11-7, on April 11.

Boys volleyball

La Jolla High School beat Mira Mesa, 25-21, 20-25, 25-15, 25-16, on April 11.
