Walter Munk Day is June 29
Renowned Scripps oceanographer Walter Munk is being honored by the San Diego City Council with a proclamation declaring June 29, 2010, to be Walter Munk Day in the city.
The recognition ceremony will be held at 10 a.m. in City Council Chambers, 202 C St., 12th Floor.
Munk recently received the Crafoord Prize from the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences recognizing his lifetime of research achievement with geosciences. The Crafoord Prize is given each spring to researchers who have made major advancements in their branches of science.
The academy recognized Munk “for his pioneering and fundamental contributions to our understanding of ocean circulation, tides and waves, and their role in the Earth’s dynamics.”
