Volunteers clean up areas of La Jolla
About 30 volunteers showed up on Jan. 9 to clean up the areas of Silverado from Girard to Herschel and ending at Ivanhoe and then east on Ivanhoe, Herschel and Girard to Torrey Pines.
Esther Viti, who chairs the Town Council’s Nell Carpenter Beautification/
Streetscape Committee, said: “We covered a huge area and had sufficient volunteers to handle it. The ages ranged from 3 years old to 80 years old.”
She added that “the volunteers heard ‘thank you’ from the pedestrians walking and from the people in cars that were driving by.” The group included students from local schools and colleges.
Viti, who said her goal is to get 50 volunteers, also oversees the benches along the coast.
About four months ago, the committee became a
subcommittee of the Streetscape/Design Committee but remains an independent group, Viti said. The committee also handles the Village alleys, flower beds and community benches.
The Streetscape/Design Committee is chaired by Glen Rasmussen under a 1992 agreement among La Jolla Town Council, Promote La Jolla and the city. The hanging baskets and newspaper racks and the BID responsibilities are under Streetscape auspices.
The next LJTC Nell Carpenter Beautification/Streetscape Clean up will be on Feb. 13. Meet at Silverado and Fay Avenue at the sign-in table.
