In an early-morning smash-and–grab at the Village Sunglass Hut at 1049 Prospect St. on May 22, thieves smashed through a storefront window and stole 190 pairs of high-end eyewear worth $48,394.

“They got us good,” said Holly Sheets, the store’s regional manager, adding that merchandise taken was expensive designer labels--Bvulgari, Prada, Versace. “The cheapest pair take was $220, and it went up to $650,” she said.

San Diego Police Department Spokeswoman Monica Munoz said store surveillance videos showed suspects, believed to be two black males, took about a minute to break through store windows using a white ceramic object before grabbing sunglasses, which they put inside light colored plastic containers. “They left on foot,” she said. “There was no vehicle.”

She added the incident occurred at 4:20 a.m.

Munoz said police contacted store owners and asked them to give them an inventory of items taken and their value.

Another Sunglass Hut store at the Del Mar Plaza was robbed of $34,000 worth of sunglasses about two weeks ago, said Sheets.
