Vikings win annual ‘Battle for the Board’

ContributorSenior midfielder Jordan Dyer scored with 58 seconds remaining to give La Jolla High a 6-5 victory over The Bishop’s School on March 27 at Edwards Stadium.
Dyer’s goal, coupled with some clutch defense by the Vikings in the waning moments, evened up the annual “Battle for the Board” at four victories for each school.
The teams compete every season for a custom surfboard that documents each year’s winner. The Knights had won the previous three regular season games, although the Vikings beat Bishop’s in last season’s CIF playoffs.
Junior attackman Mike Soumekh led La Jolla with two goals and two assists, and junior goalie James Cochrane played his best game of the season, making 13 saves. The Vikings are now 5-1 on the season. Zach Negroni and Mike P. Jensen each scored twice and Jack Kelly made 12 saves for the Knights, who fall to 3-2.
La Jolla also beat Monte Vista, 16-5, on March 24.
Bishop’s topped San Dieguito Academy, 15-5, on March 24 behind Zach Negroni’s four goals.
In girls lacrosse, Bishop’s beat Serra, 15-6, on March 26 behind Sophia Muller’s four goals and two assists. Emily Reit added three assists.
