Vikings tennis team nets key win over Cathedral

La Jolla High School got a great win last week against Cathedral Catholic, 11-7 in girl’s tennis. During the matches, the Vikings were able to score victories in all of their single matches, which included the team’s No. 1 player Alison Klein and No. 2 singles player Rozel Hernendez.

“It was a great win for us,” said head coach Maggie Mulkins. “We swept singles and won two of the doubles.”

Football

The Vikings had the week off and will play at Point Loma on Friday night. The team is 0-5 on the season.

Volleyball

The Vikings (7-9, 3-2) won two matches last week, the first a 3-0 win against Point Loma and the second, a 3-2 win against University City, The team has only one match this week on the road against Scripps Ranch.

BISHOP’S

Volleyball

The Knights (11-4 overall, 2-1 league) split a pair of games last week as they topped Francis Parker 3-1 but fell to La Jolla Country Day 3-0. Bishop’s plays just one match this week against Santa Fe Christian.

Football

The Knights continue to dominate their competition. Last week they won the Bish Bowl 21-10 against visiting Bishop High School. Up next is a road game at Santa Fe Christian on Saturday.

LA JOLLA COUNTRY DAY

Volleyball

The Torreys volleyball team is continuing to get better this season and it showed as they played the very strong Cathedral team and came away with a 3-1 victory. Mollie Rogers led the team with 20 kills and Chloe Mathis had 48 assists.

Also last week, the team played cross-town rival Bishop’s. The Torreys swept the Knights, 3-0. Rogers leading the team with 10 kills in the win, while four others had multiple kills including Gillian Howard, Maya Hood, Kendall Peterkin and Sheridan Rice.

“As long as Mollie, Sheridan and Maggie Whitney continue to pass this well, we will be a very competitive team,” head coach Peter Ogle said.

The Torreys are 9-1 this season and will be participating in the California Challenge Tournament at Torrey Pines over the weekend.

Football

Despite suiting up only 14 varsity players, including their kicker, plus a handful of JV players pulled up for the game, La Jolla Country Day (3-2, 2-0) shut out Mt. Empire High School (1-1, 2-3) to remain undefeated in Pacific League play.

For the second straight week, the Torreys were led by senior Frankie Brown, who led all ball carriers with 142 yards on 18 carries and he scored the game’s only touchdown.

The Torrey’s offense was efficient with 192 yards on the ground. Senior QB Ruben Pena connected on 12-of 22-passes for 96 yards. and added 39 yards, rushing on 13 carries.

Junior Togiao, a senior, led the team with 13 tackles and a caused fumble.

Senior kicker Hunter Khaleghi made a 25-yard, fourth-quarter field goal to round out the scoring.

Next up for the Torreys is Escondido Charter High School this Friday night, Oct. 15.

JV football

The Torreys (1-1, 3-2) beat Mt. Empire, 35-19.
