The USO Council of San Diego put on its “Stars and Stripes Ball” recently at the Sheraton Hotel and Marina. It was the 66th annual USO fundraising bash, and it honored two true local heroes - Rachel Grosvenor and June Ash. The black-tie affair had an Honorary Committee that included Mayor Jerry Sanders, The Honorable Susan Davis, Robert Horsman and Katherine Kennedy, Charlotte and Don Jacobs, Nikki and Ben Clay, and Joyce and Craig Grosvenor, among others. Debbie Case chaired the event with co-chair Elaine Garfinkel.
Patriotic flags and red-white-and-blue balloons decorated the reception area, where supporters bid on silent auction items donated by La Jolla businesses, such as La Jolla Spa MD, D.D. Allen Antiques, Adelaide’s, and Ascot Shop. Raffle winners enjoyed prizes the likes of dinner for six at Azul and a lavish dinner at Donovan’s Steakhouse.
The large local guest list included Joe and Andrea Schmidt, Bill and Barbara McColl, Louarn and Alan Sorkin, Karyn Farr and Don Berkebile, Wendy and Harold Fryoch (of La Jolla Travel Dynamics). There was plenty of military brass on hand, of course, including Lance Corporal Curtis Terry (just back from Iraq) and his dad Lt. Col. Mike Terry, Brig. Gen. Angela Salinas, and Col. Christopher O’Connor.
The evening featured dancing to live music by Pacific Brass and Electric, and a delicious dinner - but the real star was the USO itself, an organization that enhances the lives of the U.S. Armed Forces personnel and their families all around the world.
