UCSD Quizbowl team eighth

The UCSD Quizbowl finished in eighth place at the Academic Competition Federation (ACF) National Championship in College Park, Md., over the weekend of April 17-18.

Playing on extremely difficult academic questions that ran the gamut from organic chemistry to world literature, the UCSD team garnered victories over teams from Columbia, UCLA, the University of Virginia, Harvard and the University of Pennsylvania.

The victory over UPenn, a major upset, came in overtime after a see-saw match ended with a 235-235 tie and UCSD pulled out a win with a correct answer on the final tiebreaker question.

Team members consisted of second-year student Auroni Gupta, first-year student Brian Tsui, first-year student Vivek Bhave and graduate student Chris Chiego. Gupta was the sixth-highest scorer in the tournament, averaging 63.85 points per game, and was the third highest-scoring undergraduate player.

Collegiate Quizbowl consists of two teams of four players each playing rounds of 20 questions each on academic topics from the disciplines of literature, science, history, the fine

arts, religion, mythology, philosophy and the social sciences.
