A non-injury two-car crash on Torrey Pines Road near Princess Street Tuesday, Aug. 10 about 5:45 p.m. caused a backup of traffic headed into the Village.

“We drove by and saw people standing in the side of the road,” said Wally Hofmann, program coordinator at La Jolla Presbyterian Church, who along with his brother Gary Hofman from Redding, witnessed and photographed the incident.

Hofmann said he suspected texting may have been involved in the incident noting there wasn’t any glare present and that the crash happened in the middle of the busy entryway into La Jolla.

“It was a non-injury accident so it wasn’t reported,” said Lt. Andra Brown of the San Diego Police Department. “It came in to us as a report of a hazard, not a collision, as the cars could not be moved and traffic was backing up.”

Brown said both cars, a 1997 Toyota Tacoma pickup truck and a 1996 Ford were towed.

Brown noted a hazard report could be anything from a downed tree to a flooded roadway.

Hofmann said he sees an increasing amount of texting by motorists while driving and noted, “it’s impaired, distracted driving, almost like drunk driving, though I’m sure it’s not that dangerous.”
