Troop 4 Scouts earn Eagle rank
Some 100 Boy Scouts, family and friends watched Jonas Flynn, William Main and Brian Maloy of La Jolla receive the rank of Eagle Scout at a May 2 ceremony at La Jolla Presbyterian Church.
The three Scouts have been close friends since their days in Cub Scouts and said they set their sights on earning their Eagle Scout rank together. Just 2 percent of Boy Scouts achieve the distinctive rank.
Flynn, a junior at La Jolla High School, is an outdoorsman. During his time in Troop 4, Flynn held several leadership positions, received the prestigious Ad Altare Dei award, and earned 21 merit badges. For his Eagle Scout project, Flynn managed a project to build a bridge and a fence in Balboa Park to protect environmentally sensitive habitat.
Main, a junior at Cathedral Catholic High School, held numerous leadership positions in Troop 4 and is also an avid outdoorsman. He has earned 24 merit badges. His Eagle Scout project involved building a 260-square-foot shade structure for the Pro-Kids/First Tee program, which mentors underserved youths in San Diego.
Maloy, a junior at St. Augustine High School, has earned 29 merit badges. His Eagle Scout project involved producing a 120-foot post and cable fence to protect vegetation and wildlife from hikers.
