Looking for a female who can seamlessly handle crisis situations and referee sibling rivalry matches, drama queen blow-ups and meltdowns of all ages. Must have a valid driver’s license and be available 24/7 for chauffeuring duties, including to and from multiple schools; doctor, dentist and orthodontic appointments; piano, guitar and tennis lessons; tutoring sessions; and extracurricular school activities, such as soccer, softball and cheerleading practice and games.
Candidate must also be adept at housecleaning; doing laundry; ironing; food shopping; performing zoo-keeping tasks for assorted pets, including children and husbands; and possess excellent culinary skills to create fast, healthy, tasty meals three or more times a day. (Plus school lunches for persnickety palates prepared with love for multiple children five times a week.)
Ideal candidate must also have an aptitude for math, English, science and second-language tutoring, and provide homework help such as editing essays and offering art direction on various projects.
Finally, the job applicant must be deft at performing various nursing duties, especially dispensing TLC for boo-boos. Remuneration includes fabulous benefits — the potential for mutual love, respect and admiration between junior employer and employee, and the joy of watching that little employer blossom and thrive. This Sunday — May 9 — is a day set aside to honor our precious mommies. Mother’s Day celebrations were pioneered by the ancient Greeks who held spring festivals in honor of Rhea, the mother of the gods. In the 1600s, the British celebrated “Mothering Sunday,” the fourth Sunday of Lent, paying homage to the mothers of England by serving a traditional “mothering cake” to enliven the festivities.
A Philadelphian named Ana Jarvis campaigned to establish a national Mother’s Day in 1907. Jarvis and her loyal followers wrote to ministers, politicians and other influential notables to establish a national Mother’s Day on the anniversary of her mother’s death – the second Sunday in May. Their quest was a success. Seven years later, President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed Mother’s Day a national holiday to be held every year that second Sunday of May.
Whether your mother lives around the block or on another continent – Skype her, pick up the phone, e-mail, text, post a message on her Facebook wall, send a homemade card or something sweet, floral or sparkly (hint, hint), but always a gift from the heart.
If you are not going out for brunch, Dad and the kids can prepare a treat along with performing post-breakfast cleanup and dishes. Breakfast in bed is optional upon Mom’s request.
Celebratory calories including alcohol and whipped cream are allowed. Suggested menu items – pomegranate mimosa, an egg dish ranging from the simple “egg in a hole” or egg scramble to the more elaborate wild mushroom quiche or asparagus frittata. Heart-shaped melon slices, and something chocolate to accompany her favorite caffeine-infused beverage.
Crème Brulee French Toast with Drunken Strawberries
- One egg bread or challah (I prefer raisin)
- 5 eggs
- 3/4 cup of hazelnut or almond milk
- 3/4 cup of heavy whipping cream
- 1 cup of brown sugar
- 2 tablespoons of agave syrup
- 1/2 cup of unsalted butter (1 stick)
- 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract
- 2 teaspoons of Grand Marnier
Cut the challah into 1 1/2-inch slices. In a saucepan, combine the butter, sugar and agave syrup. Heat on low until melted. Pour into a 13-by-9-inch Pyrex or other baking dish. Layer the dish with the bread slices.
In a mixing bowl, whisk together the milk, cream, eggs, vanilla and Grand Marnier. Pour this mixture over the bread, cover and refrigerate for at least 4 hours.
Heat oven to 350 degrees F. Bake for 30 minutes or until puffy and golden. Top with fresh whipped cream and drunken strawberries.
- 16 ounces of strawberries, hulled and sliced
- 1/4 cup of organic sugar
- 1/4 cup of Grand Marnier
- 2 tablespoons of fresh orange juice
Combine ingredients in a small bowl. Cover and refrigerate for 2 hours.
