Then and Now: Moving homes

Built in 1887, this was one of La Jolla’s oldest houses at the corner of Wall Street and Ivanhoe Avenue. It was torn down in 1957 to make way for the Willis Allen Co. building, which still occupies the location.

More than 90 years ago, when only 45,000 people lived here, Frederick L. Brown recognized opportunity and began selling real estate. His company, now Willis Allen Real Estate, remains independent and family owned. They’re older than the San Diego Zoo, the Coronado Bridge, and the Del Mar Racetrack.
