The week in sports: Knights secure victory over local rival Vikings

Boys’ basketball

The Bishop’s School secured a 59-50 victory over neighborhood rival La Jolla High School on Jan. 9. David Stotelmyre led the Knights with 25 points and eight rebounds, and Malik Love added 18 points and eight boards.

Bishop’s toppled Escondido, 72-46, on Jan. 5. Stotelmyre poured in 26 points, and Love added 19.

The Knights recorded an 88-43 win over King’s of Sydney, Australia, on Jan. 10, paced by Stotelmyre’s 24 points.

La Jolla fell to University City, 46-45, on Jan. 6.

La Jolla Country Day beat Serra, 50-44, on Jan. 6. Dennis Roth scored 15 points, and J.T. Kelly had 14.

The Torreys picked up a 66-53 win in their Jan. 9 game against San Dieguito Academy.

Girls’ basketball

La Jolla High School topped University City, 30-24, on Jan. 6. The Vikings fell to Mira Mesa, 42-36, on Jan. 9.

The Bishop’s School beat Chaparral of Parker, Colo., 61-59, on Jan. 8.

The Knights fell to ThunderRidge of Highlands Ranch, Colo., 64-57, on Jan. 9.

They bounced back with a 68-50 win over Monarch of Louisville, Colo. on Jan. 10.

Boys’ soccer

La Jolla Country Day kicked to a 2-2 draw with Montgomery on Jan. 7, rallying from a two-goal deficit to earn a tie. Zack Wolfenzon scored with three minutes left in the game on a through ball from Dillon DuBois. Wolfenzon scored again in the game’s final minutes after Kees Thompson fed him for a run up the left side.

The Torreys cruised to a 7-1 win over Guajome Park Academy on Jan. 9. Ryan French scored three goals, and Rodrigo Cuenca scored twice and added an assist. Klitzner and Wolfenzon each scored once.

Country Day earned a 3-1 victory over Preuss on Jan. 10, improving to 9-2-1 on the season. Wolfenzon scored twice in the first half, on assists by Thompson and Ryan French. DuBois scored in the second half off a direct kick from Alex Fleischhacker.

Girls’ soccer

La Jolla High School eased to a 7-0 triumph over Mission Bay on Jan. 6. The Vikings continued to roll with a 4-1 win over Cathedral Catholic on Jan. 9.

La Jolla Country Day secured a 3-0 win over Santa Fe Christian on Jan. 7.

Girls’ water polo

La Jolla High School secured a 9-6 win over Cathedral on Jan. 7. Kate Woods led the Vikings with three goals, and Jackie Walters added two. Kelsey Ryan registered 10 saves.

La Jolla continued to roll with a 10-2 win over Scripps Ranch on Jan. 9, led by Woods’ five goals and Ryan’s 20 saves. The Vikings improved to 5-0.

Roller hockey

La Jolla Country Day skated to an 11-2 victory over Mar Vista on Jan. 5. James Owsiany and Joey Sowka each scored four goals for the Torreys, and Ben Sweeney added a hat trick.

Country Day eased to a 19-0 win over Castle Park on Jan. 7. Owsiany and freshman Cameron Sowka had four goals apiece, and Sweeney, Sam Brink and Cameron Eibl each scored three goals. Sowka netted two goals in the lopsided victory as the Torreys improved to 5-2.
