Rough Water Swim in the books; Locals tops in Masters division

Local ties prevailed in the Masters divisions of the 78th annual La Jolla Rough Water Swim when former La Jolla High swimmer Ben Weston and UCSD assistant swim coach Corrie Falcon finished first.

Weston finished the men’s mile-course in 19:55 while Falcon covered the women’s mile in 20:04.

They were among the more than 1,000 swimmers who filled the not-so-calm waters of La Jolla Cove on Sunday, marking the 78th time the race was conducted. In its first year, seven men entered.

The big winners for the day, in the spotlighted Gatorman division, which took swimmers over a triangular three-mile course, were Collom Denison of Dana Point and Dawn Heckman of Pasadena. Denison clocked in at 58:13 while Heckman bested her opponents in 1:01:05.

In the Amateur division’s mile race, Trevor Hoyt of Yucaipa finished in 19:12 and Jessica Heim of San Diego took first in the women’s division in 20:02.

Kyle Gornay of Yucaipa won the Boys Juniors race of 250 yards in 3:30 and Aubrey Bailey of El Cajon was first in the Junior Girls in 3:58.
