Hardy swimmers and their friends will brave the waters at La Jolla Shores this morning for the annual Polar Bear Plunge hosted by the La Jolla Cove Swim Club.
Each year the crowd gathers at the main lifeguard tower at Kellogg for the annual New Year’s Day event. They start showing up at about 9:30, said club member Bob West. A briefing begins at 10 a.m. and the swimmers usually dife in about 10:15.
“We have about 20 people who have swum the English Channel who’ll go all the way to the Cove and back,” West said. “Some just get wet and stand in the surf line, but most go for an open water swim.”
