Strong winds, colder weather on top

Parts of San Diego County will be swept by strong, potentially damaging winds today as a low pressure system moves into the area, according to the National Weather Service.

Winds were expected to be strongest in the mountains, where gusts could reach up to 60 miles per hour. A high wind warning will go into effect in mountain areas at 10 p.m. and continue until 2 p.m. Friday.

Winds were expected to increase tonight and should peak in intensity Thursday morning, forecasters said. The gusts could be strong enough to knock down trees and power lines, blow over unsecured objects outdoors and could potentially cause property damage, they said.

The wind could become hazardous for high-profile vehicles, and visibility may be reduced to three miles or less in blowing dust, according to the NWS.

County coastal areas, valleys and deserts also may be buffeted by gusty winds when colder weather returns tonight, the weather service said.

Showers and thunderstorms may be possible later in the week as the low pressure system intensifies, according to forecasters.
