Streak ends for La Jolla High in boys basketball

Share

La Jolla High School fell just one point shy — a heartbreaking free throw at the buzzer — of capturing its third consecutive CIF San Diego Section Division III basketball crown.

In the March 6 championship at USD’s Jenny Craig Pavilion, the Vikings fell, 47-46, to Mt. Miguel.

But the Vikings’ season isn’t over. Mt. Miguel moved on to the CIF State D-III playoffs. The Vikings were scheduled to visit Oceanview of Huntington Beach for a first-round game on March 9 after the Light’s press time.

Before Friday’s game, La Jolla had won the last two Division III championships. The Vikings (20-11) were seeded fourth and beat Montgomery, 64-35, in the first round on Feb. 23. They topped Cathedral Catholic, 53-45 in a Feb. 26 quarterfinal, and upended St. Augustine, 58-44, in a March 2 semifinal.

In other boys’ basketball last week, La Jolla Country Day lost its D-IV semifinal game on March 2, falling to Horizon Christian, 41-36.
