Spring lacrosse league starting up
The La Jolla Vikings lacrosse boys and girls teams will kick off their 10-game regular season on Feb. 22.
Part of the California Youth Lacrosse League, which runs area spring leagues, the La Jolla teams are made up of athletes from throughout the community, including students from All Hallows Academy, Bird Rock Elementary, The Gillispie School, La Jolla Elementary, Torrey Pines Elementary School and Stella Maris Academy.
The Viking coaches this year are Mike Tammaro for the boys and Christine Driscol for the girls.
The teams play through May 30, with two playoff games to determine league champions and two out-of-league matches. Games are at Coronado High School, Bishop’s High School and Cathedral Catholic High School, while Vikings practices are at Doyle Elementary.
Teams are fielded on the boys side in Division 3 for third- and fourth-graders and Division 2 is made up of local fifth- and sixth-graders. On the girls side, Division 2 is composed of La Jolla third- through fifth-graders, while Division 1 is made up of sixth- through eighth-graders. The league includes teams from Coronado, Torrey Pines, Bishops, Cathedral, Carlsbad and La Costa Canyon.
Each regional lacrosse program has a strong feeder system, according to a news release from Adrenaline Lacrosse, which handles league operations and coach placement. The company also runs leagues in Los Angeles and Texas.
