Sports Briefs: Flight Fest to start, LJ athletes honored

Flight Fest to start Sunday

Spectators are in for a thrill during the Torrey Pines Gliderport’s 12th Flight Fest.

The annual event, which includes paragliding and hang gliding races, acro and tandem events, and a Try-n-Fly Expo runs through May 24. Also planned are bag drops, spot-landing contests and kiting “wars.”

Top competitive pilots as well as local amateurs will compete for $6,000 in cash prizes.

The gliderport, at 2800 Torrey Pines Scenic Drive, was established in 1928.

LJ athletes honored

Three La Jolla girls were recognized as exceptional Scholar-Athletes at the High School Sports Association Annual Awards Breakfast on May 11. All were their school’s female nominees for the CIF San Diego Section’s 2008-09 Scholar-Athlete of the Year.

Laura Wyatt of The Bishop’s School is a varsity cross country, soccer, and track and field athlete with a 4.67 GPA. She plans to attend UC Berkeley, UCLA or the University of Washington.

Amanda Mulligan attends La Jolla Country Day School and played varsity tennis and water polo. She has a 4.43 GPA and will attend Middlebury College in the fall.

Nihal Kayali of La Jolla High School has a 4.63 GPA and was on the varsity cross country, soccer and track teams. She received additional accolades by being selected as the CIF San Diego Section female “Spirit of Sport” recipient. She will attend Yale University in the fall.

All three girls played soccer on the same Nomads team for years.
