Society Academy Awards extravaganza sparkles

Tinsel Town rolls out the red carpet for the annual Academy Awards ceremony, but Hollywood isn’t the only place the glitz and glitter of Oscar night was visible this year. The La Jolla Newcomers Club held its Academy Awards Extravaganza on the big night, and the group that gathered in La Jolla for the event was as glamorous as any of the real stars receiving the prestigious award.

The ballroom was decorated with balloons and Hollywood memorabilia for the affair, and members of the Newcomers Club were dressed to the nines - many decked out as their favorite movie stars. John Wayne, Zorro, Carmen Miranda and Anna May Wong were among the movie icons that showed up for the event. Osteria Romantica prepared a lavish buffet dinner for the members to enjoy while the big television screen put them up close and personal with the real superstars.

Newcomers’ President Doe Donovan lauded Joni Levine and Lisa Marks for organizing the gala, and Alberta Valentini for providing the private party room. Among the many movie buffs on hand for the posh affair were Judy Newman, Mike Hill, Deana Jillie, Ruth and Paul Jacobowitz, Marcie Goldstein, Robert Asaro, Rachel Martin, Jim Adams, Linda and Peter Levine, Elliot Alpert, Paula Papas, Ray and Paula Uhlir, and Richard and Adrienne Schere.
