A sinkhole opened in the area across Genesee Avenue from Scripps Memorial Hospital Thursday, forcing the closure of the roadway while authorities worked to determine what caused the problem and make repairs.
The pit in the middle of Campus Point Drive, near Campus Point Court, was reported shortly before 7:30 a.m., according to San Diego police.
A stretch of the street was blocked off in the area, which is just north of UC San Diego campus, SDPD Detective Gary Hassen said.
City crews eventually determined a storm-water pipe had ruptured below the street and leaked runoff flows that eroded the ground beneath the pavement. The sinkhole eventually grew to about 50 feet in length and 25 feet in width.
The San Diego Water Department shut off the main that serves the neighborhood as a precaution, leaving 30 or so commercial properties without functional plumbing through the day, SDWD spokesman Arian Collins said.
By early evening, there was no estimate of when the pipeline and roadway would be repaired and back in service.
