Singing chef comes to Del Mar to promote latest ‘dish’

Elizabeth Podsiadlo, aka in San Diego as The Opera Singing Chef, will stop by Earth Song Bookstore in Del Mar on Dec. 19 to promote “The Last Aria,” her new novel/companion CD.

“The Last Aria is a light ghost story for the foodie and music-lover alike,” she said. “It comes with a recording of arias, which were produced locally to accompany the story. All the arias mentioned in the book are on the CD. It also contains the music of birds, as well as old-time sound recordings.”

Podsiadlo is joined in song by tenor Jef Olson, soprano Jamie Korkos, and pianist John Drake. The arias are those of Puccini, Schumann and Wagner.

“The Last Aria” is the second in Podsiadlo’s intended series of cooking adventures. It has characters from the first novel, “Talking Pictures,” caught in a web of intrigue as they struggle to solve the mystery of the elusive Lilly LeClaire.

The plot draws inspiration from The Whaley House haunting in San Diego’s Old Town State Park and The Burg, a historic home in Romney, West Virginia, where Podsiadlo once resided.

There are 28 recipes in the book “with German, French and Southwest influences,” Podsiadlo said. “They are for full-flavored dishes, perfect for the holidays, and the kind of food the characters would find in this story.”

Podsiadlo, of Mira Mesa, said she has always had a passion for cooking and the blending of textures and flavors. She has been a personal chef since 1994.

“During this time, I’ve been singing, cooking, teaching and entertaining audiences with a slightly slanted approach to the world of opera,” she said. “I’m on a quest to bring this art form into the lives of many.”

Podsiadlo teaches cooking classes at San Diego Botanical Garden and the Natural History Museum in Balboa Park. She often appears on local morning TV shows, whipping up recipes for those tuned in.
