La Jolla Country Day senior Christian Pineda recently took third place in the National Shakespeare Competition. He was among 10 finalists from around the country who competed at New York’s Lincoln Center in the Vivian Beaumont Theater. Their performances were judged by directors, actors and critics from the New York Theater scene.
Pineda was given a selection from Richard II to read cold, and according to his drama coach, Scott Feldsher, who accompanied Pineda to New York, he “nailed” his performance.
“I’m just fortunate to do cold readings very well.” Pineda said. He called his performance, “really great.”
While in New York, Christian also toured the city, took in a Broadway show and visited New York University where he has already been accepted.
Pineda described New York as having personality like San Diego, though he admitted it’s not for everyone.
“I got the sense that it was very hip, up and coming,” he said. “It’s alive, very vibrant.”
It wasn’t the city that most impressed Pineda, however; he said that meeting his competitors and getting to know them was what he enjoyed the most.
“We really hit it off,” said Pineda.
