Senior tennis champions coming
The United States Tennis Association (USTA) National Senior Women’s Hard Court Tennis Championships returns to the La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club May 10-16.
Events will include both singles and doubles in the 50 and over, 60 and over, 70 and over, 80 and over, and 90 and over age groups.
Every age group has national championships played on three other surfaces: clay, grass, and indoors.
In conjunction with the women’s events, the club also will host its 38th Annual Spring Senior Championships for men. Although the men’s events are not national championships, they will feature many senior players who regularly compete in national tournaments. The men’s events will include singles and doubles for 60 and over, 65 and over, 70 and over, 75 and over, 80 and over, and 85 and over age groups.
Expected total participation is 300-plus players.
And on May 15-16, the site will also host the LURIE World Cup, an international men’s team match for players 90 years and older. Participants in this event will travel to La Jolla from places as far away as Australia, South America and Europe.
Admission to this week-long tournament is free and open to the public; however, there is a nominal fee for on-site parking. Draws will be posted at the Beach Club and will be available via
www.ljbtc.combeginning May 4. Daily matches will start at 8 a.m.
