Sempra to give $50,000 to Haiti relief effort

The Sempra Energy Foundation will give $50,000 to the American Red Cross International Relief Fund to provide disaster assistance in earthquake-ravaged Haiti, it was announced Friday.

The foundation is the charitable arm of the San Diego-based utility.

“The Haitian earthquake has been an unthinkable tragedy and we expect that our donation will go toward providing immediate aid to the Haitian people in the form of critical medical supplies, food and shelter,” said Jessie Knight Jr., the chairman of the board of directors of the foundation and a Sempra Energy vice president.

The Red Cross has estimated the death toll from Tuesday’s magnitude 7.0 earthquake to be 40,000 to 50,000 people, and aid groups on the ground are having trouble getting supplies to people in need.
