Search for driver of stolen vehicle abandoned in La Jolla continues

Police are continuing the search for the driver of a stolen 1996 green Honda Civic who eluded police in dense fog and abandoned the vehicle after a several-minute chase from the Sports Arena area to Nautilus Street in La Jolla on Sunday morning, Oct. 23.

“The pursuit of nine miles started out in the 3300 block of Kemper Street about 7:23 a.m. and ended in La Jolla at 1400 Nautilus Street about 7:30 p.m. when police quit due to the thick fog,” said Lt. Rick O’Hanlon of the San Diego Police Department.

After the vehicle was identified as stolen in the Sports Arena area and contacted by police, the driver refused to pull over and a chase ensued through Pacific Beach and Bird Rock.

At 7:45 a.m., about 15 minutes after police were forced to quit chasing the vehicle, it was found unoccupied at Cardeno Drive and Via Anita. The driver is believed to have fled the scene on foot.

O'Hanlon said police then searched the area for a couple of hours but were unable to find the stolen vehicle's driver.

Anyone with information about the incident can call 619-531-2000.
