Scifres gets five-year contract with Chargers
Press ReleasePunter Mike Scifres has agreed to a new five-year contract with the Chargers.
Scifres, selected as a Pro Bowl alternate every season from 2004-09, set a team record with 46.7 yards per punt last year despite consistent pressure. The new contract runs through 2016.
“Mike has been a major part of our success over the years,” General Manager A.J. Smith said. “He is a premier punter and the ultimate team player. We are thrilled he will remain a Charger for years to come.”
“I was fortunate enough to get drafted here and potentially I’m going to be able to end my career here,” Scifres said. “It’s a great franchise and I couldn’t ask for a better place to potentially end my career.”
Drafted in the fifth round in 2003, Scifres is one of the best in the NFL at pinning punts inside the 20, doing so on 40.4 percent of his career punts, an astounding rate. Opponents have returned just 40.2 percent of his punts.
Scifres is the franchises’ all-time leader for career punting average (44.5 yards) and a member of the Chargers’ 50th Anniversary All-Time Team.
