Science of food examined
La Jolla Elementary School students recently were treated to a Science Night that explored the science of food. Several of the displays involved food, and there was a talk by a UCSD School of Medicine researcher who talked about chocolate from how the three types are made to its history and effect on the body.
At one station, students sampled white, dark and milk chocolate and wrote down their impressions of its texture, smell and taste. At another, students mashed cocoa beans into a powder and then mixed in a bit of sugar to make their own cocoa powder.
The annual event was organized by teacher Debbie Balmat and parent Lisa Goodin.
