School trustees put off announcement on superintendent finalists

An announcement of the names of the three finalists for San Diego Unified School District superintendent was postponed until today.

No reason was given other than that school board members needed more time.

“This is obviously an important decision for them and they should take the time they need,’’ Bernie Rhinerson, the district’s chief district relations officer, said Tuesdsay night.

A closed-session board meeting was scheduled for Wednesday at 6:30 p.m., and an announcement could come afterward, Rhinerson said.

The district is currently run by interim Superintendent Bill Kowba, following last year’s departure of Terry Grier for Houston.

Kowba, a veteran district executive, is expected to be a finalist.

The board also scheduled a public forum for Thursday evening in which the finalists will take questions from the audience. The board plans to make its final selection by the end of the month.
