San Diego ZLAC Rowing Club gearing up for Charles Regatta in Boston
New Junior Women’s Crew head coach David Schary at ZLAC Rowing Club said his squad is hard at work preparing for an upcoming competition.
“We are already practicing hard for the Head of the Charles Regatta in Boston,” said Schary. “We have submitted our entries to the Head of the Charles and anticipate our acceptance soon for the October 20th race.”
Beginning with this race, Schary has intentionally set up a tougher, but more rewarding Fall schedule for the team that includes Head of the American, Newport Autumn Rowing Festival, San Diego Fall Rowing Classic, Row for the Cure and the Long Beach Christmas Regatta.
“I am confident that the team will rise to the challenge and through hard work, become stronger and faster,” continued Schary. “Although I want everyone to have fun and enjoy rowing, I do hold high expectations for this season. My goal is to improve ZLAC’s rankings among the California crews and compete in the US Rowing Youth National Championships in June 2008.”
Schary, who rowed for four years at UC-Davis, was a three-time gold medallist at the Western Intercollegiate Rowing Association (WIRA) Championships held in Sacramento. He previously coached UC San Diego’s Men’s Novice team, whose heavyweight and lightweight won bronze and silver, respectively at the WIRA Championship Regatta in April. The novice head coach for ZLAC is Dan Putnam, who has been coaching there for over four years and rowed lightweight for University of San Diego.
“I would encourage all middle and high school girls to come to ZLAC and see how much fun rowing can be,” said Putnam “It’s a competitive and team sport that is very rewarding.” ZLAC has produced three Olympic champions, as well as national team participants; top universities in the U.S., including Harvard, Princeton, Duke and USC (2007 PAC-10 women’s rowing champions) have recruited ZLAC juniors in previous years. A Kickoff Breakfast for new and returning rowers will be held Saturday, Sept. 8 from 8 to 9:30 a.m. at the ZLAC clubhouse at 1111 Pacific Beach Drive on Mission Bay. Come meet the coaches and team members and find out more about ZLAC’s rowing program.
