Rock legend to attend ‘Swing for Kids’ benefit
Legendary entertainer Chubby Checker will be the guest of honor at a “Swing for Kids Tee-Off” party from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. July 19 at the Rancho Santa Fe home of “Swing for Kids” honorary committee member and Rotary International Paul Harris Fellow Irene Valenti.
The event will include a wine tasting from South Coast Winery, an opportunity drawing, and music by Don Clark.
“Swing for Kids” is San Diego’s first eco-inspired golf tournament, set for the Del Mar Country Club on Sept. 3. Proceeds from both events will benefit the Rotary Club of Rancho Santa Fe, Kids Korps USA, San Pasqual Academy, Pro Kids Golf Academy and Camp Pendleton Armed Services/YMCA.
Chubby Checker revolutionized popular culture and changed the music industry when he appeared on American Bandstand in 1960 and performed “The Twist,” launching a new era in rock and roll. He is a rock icon, who has had 36 hit records, is the only artist to have a Single achieve number one — twice — and have nine double-sided hits. According to Billboard, Chubby has the No. 1 Single for the entire decade of the 1960s. Billboard Magazine, September 11, 2008 named “The Twist” the No. 1 song on the planet. Chubby was awarded the first Platinum Single, the first Rock Grammy and has sold an astonishing 250,000,000 records over the years. Most recently, an entire new generation has been introduced to his music and he has signed a major label deal with RED/Sony. www.
