Rider injured, horse euthanized on opening day

A jockey was trampled by a horse Wednesday when his own mount stumbled and broke a leg during the third race on opening day of the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club’s 70th season.

Rafael Bejarano, 27, tumbled off 8-year-old gelding Mi Rey when the animal broke its right front leg shortly after 3 p.m., officials said.

Bejarano fell onto the track and was stepped on by another horse. Medics took him to Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla for precautionary X-rays of his clavicle and jaw, said Dan Smith, senior spokesman for the thoroughbred club.

A condition report on the jockey was not available by late afternoon.

Mi Rey was taken off the track for an examination and had to be euthanized, Smith said.

No other riders or thoroughbreds were injured in the accident, he said.
