Restaurant critic to discuss book

Frank Bruni, restaurant critic for The New York Times since 2004, will visit UCSD’s Revelle Forum at The Neurosciences Institute at 7 p.m. Sept. 16 to speak about his forthcoming book, “Born Round: The Secret History of a Full-Time Eater.”

Before becoming a restaurant critic, Bruni worked as a White House political reporter and a former Rome bureau chief for the Times. He says he has a personal history as an overeater, having grown up in a self-described “big, loud Italian family in White Plains, N.Y.” His book is a humorous look at his journalistic career, a paean to great cooking and an honest examination of his troublesome and sometimes tragic struggle with weight and eating disorders.

Bruni will be interviewed by Phylllis Pfeiffer, publisher of the La Jolla Light, which is a new sponsor for the event.

The Revelle Forum is a series of lectures, readings, and public interviews with leading figures from the worlds of arts and culture, literature, current events, and the media. Named in honor of Roger Revelle, distinguished scientist and one of the “founding fathers” of the San Diego campus of the University of California, the series reflects the broad range of Revelle’s intellectual interests and his aspirations that UCSD would become a center for academic research that would also provide the community at large with information and enrichment in arts, culture and issues of public interest.
